레이 브라운
본명 Raymond Matthews Brown, 1926년 10월 13일- 2002년 7월 2일
그는 재즈 콘트라베이스하면 제일 먼저 떠오르던 세계 최고의 콘트라베이스 연주자였습니다. 현존 하는 모든 재즈 콘트라베이스 연주자에게 가장 강한 영향을 주었으며, 앞으로도 그러할 것입니다. 그는 정말 두꺼운 사운드와 블루지한 느낌, 그리고 경쾌한 스윙감을 가지고 있었고, 죽기직전까지도 세계투어를 다닐정도로 많은 연주를 하였습니다.
<일대기>
미국 피츠버그 출생이고 8살부터 피아노 레슨을 받기 시작하여 고등학교때 학교에 많은 피아노 학생이 있음을 알고 트럼본을 시작합니다. 그러나, 얼마 못가 학교 재즈 오케스트라에 베이스 연주자로 참가하면서 본격적인 베이스 연주를 시작합니다.
레이 브라운은 지미 블랜톤이라는 두크 엘링톤 밴드의 젋음 베이스 연주자에게서 가장 큰 영향을 받았으며, 고등학교를 졸업함과 동시에 뉴욕으로 이주하여 연주생활을 시작합니다.
20살에 뉴욕으로 이주하여, 행크존스, 디지 길레스피, 아트 테이텀, 찰리파커등 당대 최고의 뮤지션들과 연주를 하기 시작합니다. 그리하여, 1946년부터 1951년까지 디지 길레스피 밴드에서 연주하였으며, 1947년 최고의 재즈 싱어 엘라 피츠제랄드와 결혼하여 1952년까지 함께 삽니다.
1949년, 재즈 필하모닉 오케스트라와 활동을 하였는때, 그때, 재즈 피아니스트 오스카 피터슨을 만납니다. 그후 1951년부터 1966년까지 오스카 피터슨 트리오의 베이스 연주자로 활약하였고, 1967년부턴 자신의 트리오를 이끌며 수백가지의 프로젝트를 진행합니다.
1980년대부터 1990년대까지 피아니스트 진 해리스와 피아노 트리오를 하였고, 1980년대에는 무명으로 클럽에서 활동하던 다이아나 크롤을 발굴하여 스타로 만듭니다.
2002년 7월 2일
인디애나쇼에서 출연순서를 기다리던 그는 갑자기 사망합니다.
